Some Bible translators say that the first word of this verse is not “who” but what “shall separate us the love of Christ”. I’ll take it either way of both, because God makes it clear throughout the Bible that there isn’t anything, any person or any problem that can separate us from the love of God.
We need to be reminded of this truth because it’s easy to become discouraged when trouble comes upon us. Sickness, marital discord, financial difficulties and loneliness are just a few of the things in life that can cause us to think that God doesn’t care about us.
The Children of Israel became discouraged because of the years they wondered in the wilderness. David, Solomon and even the prophets became discouraged from time to time. Life is full of disappointments and problems. Unfortunately, too many people are looking for the problem free life and it just doesn’t exist. What’s the answer? Do we become remorseful or resentful because of our difficulties? Do we try to create some fantasy land of “faith” so called and deceive ourselves that everything is all right when we know it isn’t? Or do we try to escape, as so many people today try to do, into alcohol, drugs or work. Yes, work! We can become addicted to “work” when it causes us, like booze, to forget those around us or our responsibilities to God. And just as most addicts refuse to see their dependency upon a given substance, most people in our materialistic society refuse to see their addiction and dependency to money and the comforts of life. As tragic as the number of alcohol and drug addicts is, there will be more people in our materialistic society refuse to see their addiction and dependency to money and the comforts of life. As tragic as the number of alcohol and drug addicts is, there will be more people in Hell because of their addiction to work. The very work that’s needed to pay the bills or help them get ahead or get rich will cause multitudes to be cast into hell.
The love of God is reaching out to you friend, don’t ignore it. Jesus died for your sins and He wants you to be happy because of His love, not because you don’t have any problems. The truth of the matter is, as you trust in the love of Jesus, He carries the heavy end of your burden so that, with His love, you really don’t have any problem that you can’t cope with. Draw closer to Him, He loves you and He wants you to be encouraged in His love and His love alone.
